Chris Caplinger

CEO · Lonocode

Low Code software development, Entrepreneurship, Product Management, Leadership, AI in the workplace

Read biography

I have been actively engaged in the software industry since 1991, following the completion of my Bachelor of Science degree in 1990 from Southwest Missouri State University (currently Missouri State University). I began my professional journey on a help desk, supporting software users, and rapidly advanced to positions in software development and team leadership. By 1996, I had become a specialist in Enterprise Content Management (ECM) consulting, and in 1999, I launched my own consultancy firm.
In 2001, I co-founded KnowledgeLake, a company focused on digital document management, where I held the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO). My duties encompassed overseeing product and technology teams and creating vital technology partnerships. Notably, I orchestrated a comprehensive collaboration with Microsoft to integrate paper document conversion into SharePoint. Under my direction, KnowledgeLake also achieved significant licensing landmarks, such as securing an agreement with Fujitsu (now Ricoh) to white-label our software with their ScanSnap scanners globally. Briefly, white labeling is when a company makes a product that another company rebrands and sells under its own name.
To further enhance our offerings, I obtained technology licenses from ABBYY for OCR capabilities and from Adobe for PDF creation tools, among others. After divesting my shares in KnowledgeLake in 2013, I founded RecordLion, a trailblazer in SaaS-based digital records management. This endeavor culminated in its sale to a major competitor in 2017, after which I joined Gimmal. At Gimmal, I initially served as VP of Engineering, guiding the team towards high-standard software engineering practices before advancing to CTO to manage modern product development strategies. Eventually, as President and Chief Strategy Officer, I spearheaded the company's transformation into a SaaS-centric business. In this role, I continued my licensing expertise by arranging a partnership to sublicense our records management software to Canadian municipalities and procuring a license from an eDiscovery vendor to white-label their software as an add-on to our existing solution.
After leaving Gimmal in 2022, I took a sabbatical and returned in 2023 to establish Lonocode. This new venture aims to harness low-code technologies and artificial intelligence to create software solutions for other businesses, with a goal of bookmarking my career in the software industry.
My contributions have been acknowledged through co-authoring “SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Content Management,” published by Wrox, a division of O'Reilly, and through numerous articles and white papers. Additionally, I have regularly presented at Microsoft conferences and industry events, sharing my expertise in software development and technology.

I believe this mostly applies to businesses producing AI technology and not so much businesses using AI to product outcomes. With that in mind, whether it's technology or politics, the technology itself, or the data centers being built, transparency of how and what is being built is the single biggest thing thing they can do to earn trust. The transparency must be consistent because it takes a cycle of proof to make this happen.

Nathan Tippy is a software engineer with 33 years of experience dating back to the early 90s. Over that time he has worked with many programming languages across a wide range of industries, including ministry, telecom, avionics, pharmaceutical, insurance, and education. He has seen it all from waterfall, TDD, agile up to vibe and beyond. Most recently he hosts the STL Rust Meetup and is building Rhetor8, a search engine that delivers trustworthy answers backed by signed citations and proof.

Nathan has walked with Christ for more than 40 years and he enjoys teaching both Bible studies and Sunday school. Married since 1993, he and his wife have five adult children. He lives near the park, where he likes campfires and riding e-bikes through the trails.

The same thing that has always built trust in software: verifiable results instead of black-box claims. After 33 years building systems in regulated and high-stakes environments (avionics, pharma, telecom, insurance, education) I’ve seen that people trust what they can check. That’s why I’m building Rhetor8: a search engine that returns answers with signed citations and cryptographic proof back to the original sources. When an AI can show exactly where a claim came from, who signed it, and that it hasn’t been altered, the conversation shifts from “trust the model” to “verify the evidence.” Businesses earn trust when they make their SI auditable, cite its sources, and design for accountability rather than just fluency. Proof is what turns an impressive demo into something people are willing to rely on.

Transparency in their commitment to ensure that technology remains a tool and not a crutch, that it serves human productivity and neither replaces us nor becomes our master.

Better decisions begin with better questions.

Can we use AI? Should we use it? Under what conditions will it earn trust and help people flourish?
